Consider going to Niagara Falls, Ontario, at the very start of tourist season to beat the crowds and take in the sights with ease.

Sometimes the worst thing about a tourist area is the tourists. But while Niagara Falls, Ontario, is a huge annual tourist draw, consider going in early spring to take in the sights – including of course the falls, a natural wonder of the world.

Not much more than an hour's drive from Toronto, Niagara Falls is a perfect getaway for couples and family. But while getting a good view can be a difficult thing to do in the warmer season, it's markedly easier to get a great glimpse of the powerful falls in early spring.

Fewer people, less hassle

The reasons? Tourist season has just kicked off in Niagara at the start of April, so getting around on foot is a lot easier as there are far fewer people than during summer months. And because there are fewer people, there are often more prime lookout spots along the guardrails to snap some photos or just observe.

Not too hot, not too cold

Another plus of visiting the area in early spring is the mild temperature, which was well above zero Celsius on April 4, 2011 (in fact, it was 18 C that afternoon according to The Weather Network). However, the high winds near the falls can spray pedestrians with a cool mist (point your camera away from the falls when you're not shooting to avoid a spotty lens), but for the most part, the walk alongside the falls is very tolerable this time of year.

Add to that the fact while the temperature is above freezing, there are still visible remnants of winter; ice and snow still adorn the water's surface, making for a very striking and dramatic scene.

Many options for overnight stays

While there are several places to lodge close to the Falls, consider the Niagara Falls Hilton Fallsview; with more than 50 floors, one can get a great view from above. While a bit pricier than some other venues, the hotel is also offering deals (as of April 4, 2011) including meal vouchers.

Navigating downtown Niagara Falls by vehicle is also easier before the tourist season really takes hold; but keep in mind there is some road construction currently underway, so expect some minor delays.

With many things to do in Niagara Falls, there are also two large casinos for those looking to try their luck.

With loads of spots to eat, drink and be entertained, Niagara Falls is a great choice for tourists before the tourist season kicks into high gear. Beat the crowds now and enjoy the breathtaking view! You'll be glad you did.
